The electoral processes in Colombia during much of the nineteenth century, even though they were not free of defects, are considered the mechanism of political legitimation par excellence. Its performance stands out in the three dimensions of political democracy, both for its competitive nature, the participation of the population, as well as respect for civil and political rights. This article analyzes the Colombian elections of that period from the point of view of democracy and democratization, with special consideration to the impact on Panama.
